I was able to get out last weekend! I was happy because the weekend before, our truck broke down and it was unable to drive. But with a few fixes here and there, she was running smoothly again! All three pictures on this post were taken by me.
This past trip, we were able to go up to Sooke, and on to a trail that leads up to Tugwell Lake. This trail is pretty easy, a few spots we had some trouble getting up a steep climb, but we were able to get through it with determination and the Low-4 gear! The truck that we have is a 1988 Toyota pickup. It can be a little sketchy at times, mostly because my partner just learned standard, but it gets the job done. Actually, one of the things that I’m looking forward to during my free inquiry is learning how to drive standard. I know the gist of it, but I’ve never actually fully learned. I want to start practicing, but only in residential areas. The thought of me trying to learn standard whilst weaving through trees and climbing up rocks scares me just a bit!
Taking from what we learned in class on Monday, I’m actually pretty excited to start using some of these open education resources. Obviously, I’m not going to be able to get out to the trail every single weekend. I’m going to try, but there are factors like my time management of homework, and the truck actually running that may affect this. Because of the OER’s we learned about, I don’t really have to worry about not getting out every Saturday. Some of the things I’d like to learn is how to effectively read maps, and to do some research about the areas we visit, more specifically their history and the Indigenous lands on which we explore. With the OER’s, and especially “Unsplash”, I will be able to search for and use various media to incorporate into my free inquiry posts. If I am not able to get out and go 4x4ing, then at least I know I will be able to use these resources to continue learning and exploring more about the off-roading world.
